The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking reliable, enthusiastic, positive Gymnastic Instructors for several temporary positions to coach and work with children of all ages and adults in our Gymnastic Program. Our successful, well-established program offers gymnastics to both boys and girls, starting from parent and tot classes through preschool and level classes based on the USA Gymnastics (USAG) program. Specialty programs include camps, birthday parties, special events, teens, adapted, and adults. Arlington Gymnastics also offers girls USAG Xcel competitive team and USAG Development Program competitive team (boys and girls).

Major Duties/Specific Tasks

  • Providing tailored Gymnastics instruction to student’s needs while evaluating student performance;
  • Preparing for class instruction, lesson plans, and curriculum;
  • Setting up equipment prior to class and securing equipment after class;
  • Inspecting equipment and reporting unsafe equipment to supervisor;
  • Recommending purchase of supplies and equipment; and
  • Completing required class paperwork, such as attendance reports.

Currently, our program is looking for people who can work weekday evenings and weekends (both Saturday and Sunday) and experienced in any of the following areas:

  • Women’s Artistic Gymnastics coaches at the Optional (Levels 6-10);
  • Compulsory (pre-team through Level 5) and Xcel Bronze through Diamond Gymnastics;
  • Men’s Artistic Gymnastics coach for Compulsory Gymnastics (pre-team through Level 5);
  • Recreational Classes (preschool, youth, and adult); and
  • Adapted Gymnastics (participants with disabilities)

Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

Recreation Instructor I start at: $19.71 per hour

This position is typically assigned to beginner-level classes or classes where less technical expertise is required to effectively instruct class participants.

Recreation Instructor II starts at: $23.38 per hour

This position is typically assigned to intermediate, or single-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex.

Recreation Instructor III starts at: $27.02 per hour

This position is typically assigned to advanced-level classes and may be assigned to teach therapeutic recreation courses or sections specifically designed for participants with disabilities, including must have the knowledge and ability to serve as a substitute gymnastics instructor for many other classes when required.

Selection Criteria

Minimum: High School Diploma/GED; plus

Recreation Instructor I

  • 400 hours of technical Gymnastics experience.

Recreation Instructor II:

  • 800 hours of technical Gymnastics experience; and
  • 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Recreation Instructor III:

  • 1200 hours of technical Gymnastics experience; and
  • 50 hours must be as an instructor.
  • Technical experience may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates the following:

  • Involvement in a competitive or recreational gymnastics program;
  • Current or previous gymnastics instruction through coaching or teaching;
  • First Aid, CPR certifications, and/or other gymnastics certifications; and/or
  • Working with children of all ages.

Special Requirements

Must possess or obtain the First Aid and CPR certifications within three (3) months of employment.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver’s license and provide proof, or the applicant must have the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at locations other than the primary worksite.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Multiple shifts, Weekday evenings (4pm-8:30pm) and Weekends (Saturday: 830am-6pm, Sunday: 12pm-7pm). Most hours are in the evening and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
