Aloha! Four Seasons Resorts Lana’i is seeking a Observatory Specialist I

The Lāna’i Observatory features the Kilo Hoku Experience is a new cultural program from Love Lanai, and cultural advisors share ike kupuna (ancestral knowledge) of the celestial sphere as well as guide guests on a tour of the night sky. In the Hawaiian language, kilo may be interpreted as “an observer,” or “to observe,” and hoku may be interpreted as “star.” Lanai is an ideal location to observe the stars, with low levels of atmospheric and light pollution to facilitate stargazing. The telescope is housed in a two-storey domed structure that spans approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters) in diameter. Made by PlaneWave Instruments, the PW1000 is an observatory-class telescope featuring a direct drive altitude-azimuth (Alt-Az) mounting system, stands 135 inches (3.4 meters) high, and weighs approximately 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms).

Job Requirements:

Basic Technical skills and knowledge required (Systems: Excel, Word, Powerpoint) Previous guest and front-of-house hotel experience preferred. Good communication skills and public speaking required. Able to work with minimal supervision. Knowledge of the Hawaiian Culture and Lāna’i preferred. Valid Hawaii Drivers License required. General knowledge of Astronomy preferred.

Job Duties:

Support public engagement activities for the Lāna’i Observatory Telescope. Work with a multi-disciplinary team including the Lāna’i Cultural Advisors, scientists, traditional ocean navigators, educators, and guest speakers. Assist with programming and planned events for focused on Astronomy and Ancient Hawaiian Voyaging for guests, community, and students Assist with staff training and development to operate the telescope. Provide mentorship for internships and STEM programming. Oversee general maintenance of the observatory building and equipment.

We are looking for individuals who have a solid knowledge of the location, are hands-on and have strong business acumen, good communication skills, and are able to evidence professionalism and adaptability.

Skills:

Organizational, motivational, and leadership skills; excellent communication skills (both written and verbal); ability to create, plan and manage activities effectively; strong business knowledge; analytical skills and interpersonal skills, and up-to-date knowledge of computer programs and applications, must be energetic, approachable, flexible and creative.

Candidates must have valid work authorization for the U.S.
