Full Job Description

Due to the funding requirements of Canada Summer Jobs, the successful candidate must be

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

HOURS:

  • 35/week, Monday to Friday
  • early morning (6:30 start) or later morning shifts
  • 6-8 weeks starting before 25th July, ending no later than September 3rd

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with Nourishing Hope Marketplace, Breakfast Connect, Cooking Classes, youth summer program (providing food), emergency food bags, and other food-related programs.
  • Daily food rescue pick-ups, sorting and packaging donations as received.
  • Organize and deliver food to community partners and situations of emergencies needing help.
  • Maintain weight records of food being received and distributed.
  • Pick up other donations when needed.
  • Safely store provisions and provide/mark dates on storage containers.
  • Organize and maintain a clean and safe workplace.
  • Provide training to volunteers and temporary employees and adopt all appropriate policies with respect to food handling and best before/expiry date requirements to ensure all food distributed complies with appropriate guidelines.
  • Follow organization protocols and FoodSafe protocols.
  • Assist the Food Services Coordinator in the volunteer management/system/structure and activities of the volunteers.
  • Interact with a diverse community and contribute to a respectful and compassionate environment.
  • Assist the Food Services Coordinator in strategically collaborating with partners to improve development opportunities and outcomes.
  • Assist with maintenance tasks to ensure health and safety in the work environment.
  • Report regular updates to the Food Service Coordinator and Maintenance team.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of computer work, occasionally leading meetings/training workshops, lifting items up to 40lbs, and intervening in physical confrontations.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of computer/word processing, attentive listening, and alertness to escalated reactions of clients.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

The incumbent may receive monetary donations and process to business department according to operating policies. The incumbent may also be responsible for handling gift cards according to operating policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the community ministries office and community.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Angry and abusive people
  • Work-related stress

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (i.e., violent/aggressive client)
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Other potentially dangerous situations

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • FoodSafe training
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training
  • Self-Care/Debriefing
  • WHMIS

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • The successful job applicant will have completed or working towards a high school diploma or higher level of education

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Education/Certifications:

  • Degree or diploma in food-related disciplines or logistics management is an asset.

Experience:

  • Experience working with marginalized communities
  • Working with food

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong communication skills – written and interpersonal
  • Organizational skills – scheduling, proposals, case management
  • Technological skills – G-suite, Microsoft Office, and other software systems
  • Knowledge about food: cooking, hygiene, and nutrition

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • Class 5 license (equivalent or higher) and a clean driver’s abstract
  • Completion of our online abuse training
