By joining our Division of Highway Design, Developmental Branch as a Transportation Engineer I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to perform professional engineering work in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of highways, structures, or facilities.
Holders of the Transportation Engineer I position will complete tasks such as:
- Design or coordinate the planning and design of transportation facilities.
- Manage, coordinate, and oversee activities of engineering assignments.
- Provide support for Transportation Cabinet District Offices, design staff, and others.
- Evaluate the performance of software and hardware related to design software platforms.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
- Knowledge of the highway design process.
- Become familiar with the workflows and processes utilizing Openroads.
- Diagnose and correct issues within the many software projects utilized by engineers.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
- Experience in Inroads or Openroads
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Should maintain a valid driver’s license. This position requires working on a computer and sometimes sitting for long periods. May involve visiting job sites to gather project data information.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee’s initial six-month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KY LPE under KRS 322 until licensure is obtained. Working Conditions
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
